Why We Sleep

In the first part of the course we discuss who needs sleep, what is sleep, and why we sleep.

While there are many competing theories for why we sleep, one of my favorites is the plasticity theory, as this focuses on brain development.

In this preview video, I talk about how slow wave sleep (or deep sleep) is seen in the part of the brain that is associated with different developmental milestones.

Social Jetlag

Part 2 of the course is about sleep and circadian physiology, including sleep architecture and the two-process model of sleep.

This preview video discusses what happens when a teen stays up late and sleeps in on weekends, giving themselves social jetlag.

Signs of Deficient Sleep

In the third part of the course we discuss normal sleep duration across development, as well as the signs, causes, and consequences of deficient sleep.

Deficient sleep is more than not getting enough sleep, but also includes poorly timed sleep, poor quality sleep, or sleep disorders.

This preview video begins to answer the question "how can you tell if kids are getting enough sleep?" with a couple common signs of deficient sleep.

Toddler Sleep Hygiene

Part 4 of the course reviews sleep patterns, sleep hygiene, and sleep disturbances across development.

This preview video provides suggestions for how to keep children in a crib until the recommended age of 3 years.

Screening for Sleep Problems

In the fifth part of the course we discuss clinical screening and characteristics of the most common pediatric sleep disorders.

This preview video provides some suggestions for screening questions busy clinicians can use in their practice.

Intro to Pediatric Insomnia

Part 6 of the course introduce the diagnostic criteria for insomnia, the evidence base for pediatric insomnia treatment, behavior theory, and types of pediatric insomnia.

This preview video highlights common types of negative sleep onset associations, as well as how I explain sleep onset associations to parents..
